Cutting out the cat

Ive been told by a friend that cutting out the cat would give me an extra few BHP. If this is so will it have a downside other than failing an emissions test. A local exhaust specialist has said he can give me an extra 10BHP by making a new middle box, which in effect would also cut out the cat. Anyone done this and if so was it noticeable?

Don't do it, you'd be better off in buying a decent system like the Forge or Milltek
Purely out of interest, why?

Forge or Milltek sports cats cost about £700+. A bypass should be beneficial as the cat itself is restrictive, with the exhaust itself not as much. Should cost quite a bit less.

it'll give you better turbo spool up + a bit more top end - and also fail the MOT. The Audi system isn't bad anyway - it runs two cats in parallel which gives good gas flow. The TT exhaust system though is quite restrictive where it runs under the haldex unit at the rear of the car.

Modifying the cats is only really worthwhile if you intend to go over 300BHP. I ran sports cats on my TT

But got them cheaper in a group buy - on their own they are just to expensive for the small gains they give (IMHO)

Failing the MOT isnt an issue as I ll be keeping the original middle box, which was bought new from the stealer in August and replacing it with a second hand unit from a local breakers yard.

Has anyone gone for a straight through exhaust with a flame kit? :)

I've got a complete Milltek system on mine with Milltek sports cats and straight through Milltek (no middle box) and it sounds great - being as its on a TTR, its not too 'droney' either. Haven't got a flame kit though ;D
