Cleaning tailpipes....

My tailpipes seem to be REAL dirty - maybe even coated in some kinda corrosion where they've never been cleaned. :(

So as you can guess I'm gonna give it a bash at cleaning them the weekend, and see what happens.

They seem to be like a copper colour underneath the dirt and grime ? Has anybody else got this kinda colour, or should they ALL be the stainless steel look ?

And finally, anybody got any recommendations for cleaning this sort of surface ? I was considering a scouring pad and something like brasso to try and cut through that layer. :?

Autosol keeps my blueflame v v v shiney!! I used it on my old S3 after having never cleaned them before and it took a couple hours but I got some shine out of them...use some sort of nail brush and loads of soapy water..Auto sol is more of a polish than something that will eat at the grime...

Aaaah.....good thinking Batman. I used to use this stuff on my MK2 Escort bumpers (those were the days!), and they came up perfect. Thanks :)

I can vouch for the tailpipes being dirty due to previous owner - I won't take the blame for ANY dirt on my car !! :p

Try a little piece of that "scotchbrite" (green coarse pan scourer/ sanding material) with some Autosol. It won't scratch the pipes and will help shift the muck...'tis good stuff

I used a very fine grade of wire wool on the end of mine a few weekends ago - from behind the car you can actually see it has twin pipes sticking out the back now! Sweet! :D

rough side of a washing up sponge and Megs metal polish for me, but ive been doin that since it was new so it never gets that dirty
I've got that NXT metal polish, as I used to have a decent stainless steel on my previous car, but unfortunately it doesn't seem "intense" enough to break through the crap.

Still, it is a good polish if yer pipes are fairly clean

Dear Geniuses

I cleaned my pipes today <ahem>. They have now transformed from a black / copper looking heap of sh... into the dogs b0ll0cks of chrome looking tailpipes.

I used some fine wire wool (kinda like scouring pad material, but you can pull it apart), with some carbolic soap and water to start with - this got rid of alot of the top layer of sh....

Then used the Autosol (couldn't believe it's only £3.75) with a nice microfibre cloth for gentle application......the ugly duckling of tailpipes are now two beautiful shiney swans sticking out the arse of my car !!

Thanks peeps :p

Hmm... I thought the copper colour that appeared, when I cleaned the thick layer of carbon from my tail pipes with Autosol, was an indication that I'd worn through the chrome layer and had penetrated to the copper plating beneath. Perhaps I'll have another look..

I dont think that you need to use any abrasive cleaner on the tail pipes.
Mine were caked with thick black soot, i doubt the previous owner had ever cleaned them.

I used a standard kitchen green scouring pad, and water. Then i just used some autoglym chrome polish and they came up like new.

I kinda thought the same....the previous owner had definitely neglected this car BIG TIME !!

Personally I wasn't too keen about using the wire wool stuff as I thought it might scraaaaatch the pipes, but with soap and water it worked absolute wonders.

THEN, the Autosol kinda "buffed it up" afterwards to bring the shinyness through

I know! Tell me about it! It didn't help the fact I had my green barbour gillet on, matching green boots and my bright yellow marigold rubber gloves too, on all fours with my head shoved near the pipes  with a cloth in one hand and the cleaning bottle in the other and my neighbour shouting out that I looked like I was ready to do surgery on someone!  :D

LMAO.....that's what some neighbours said to me as they walked past. Obviously I wasn't wearing the same kinda clothes, but it was the surgical gloves that done it
